Although Île Rock—a nondescript island in Magtogoek/St Lawrence River, Tiohtià:ke/Montreal—is smaller than a football field, something big is happening there. This something revolves around the revival of the Carmantine d’Amerique (American Water-willow).
Subsequent to the science-storytelling of this StoryMap, six expeditions were arranged in Summer 2025 with 12-18 volunteers attending each to learn about and help care for Carmantine d’Amerique. Interest has grown so quickly that volunteers will deliver another public talk in Fall 2025, and have been asked to make the story into a workshop for schools.
StoryMap creator Annabel Howard, in collaboration with community partners Demain Verdun and Héritage Laurentien, has also created and delivered a public talk as part of the Verdun-sur-Fleuve festival. This work has helped raise awareness and engagement around protecting the Water-willow.
